Learning Support

Learning Support Programs

Mohawk offers a variety of Learning Support programs to meet the diverse needs of our students. Each program offers a variety of supports and utilizes instructional strategies that address the individual needs of student. The Mohawk Learning Support Program provides resources and instructional strategies that give students the physical, social, emotional and intellectual support needed to learn. The Learning Support Reading/Language Arts teachers implement reading strategies based on Ortin Gillingham principals and techniques. Phonemic awareness, oral reading fluency and vocabulary and comprehension strategies are also included in daily lessons. The Learning Support program at the Elementary School that contains the Emotional/Behavior component supports students who have difficulty functioning totally in the general education setting. Often they need direct instruction in social skills, a “Check and Connect” program, or accommodations within the classroom setting to meet their specific needs and experience success. The Learning Support Program with the Autistic/Life Skills structure that is located in the Mohawk High School was developed to support students who have very complex needs. Students in this program, often have individualized support from a paraprofessional or PCA and are educated in a small group setting. Their instruction may include direct instruction in social skills, living skills, as well as related services, such as intense language therapy, physical and occupational therapy.
